D.C. Women’s March chapter pulls back from protest, questions national organization’s fundraiser

The D.C. Women’s March chapter will not actively engage its members to attend a mass civil disobedience in the nation’s capital on Thursday due to a questionable fundraiser.

Leaders of the national Women’s March will risk arrest to end “criminalizing undocumented immigrants” and halt “locking children in prison camps,” according to the End Family Detention: Women Take Action event page. Leaders have asked the public to help fundraise for pizza, training, and bail for arrestees.

However, the D.C. chapter is not so sure where the money is going.

“We requested greater transparency and explanation for the monies raised since there is no bail in D.C. and we have not been made aware of any training taking place at the local level,” the D.C. chapter posted on Facebook on June 27.

The D.C. chapter explained they offered their local office to help reduce costs associated with training, but received no communication from the national organizers. They wrote it is “impossible to enforce” every person to training in order to protest.

Currently, the Women’s March has raised $135,552 out of $150,000 over eight days for the June 28 protest.
