While liberals continue to pillory President Trump for the immigrant child crisis at the U.S. border, Americans think the blame belongs elsewhere.
A majority of Americans blame illegal immigrant parents of the separated children for the crisis that has erupted at the border, according to a new Rasmussen poll.
As families attempting to enter the U.S. illegally are stopped at the border, the children are separated from those who are referred for prosecution, as the minors cannot be kept with the detainees. This, according to 54 percent of likely voters polled by Rasmussen, is directly the fault of the parents.
“When families are arrested and separated after attempting to enter the United States illegally, who is more to blame – the parents for breaking the law or the federal government for enforcing the law?” the poll question asked.
The majority of those responding to the national telephone and online survey believe parents, not the Trump administration, are responsible for the approximately 2,000 children who have already been separated from their families. Only 35 percent said the government is more to blame.
A breakdown of the numbers showed that 82 percent of Republicans and 56 percent of voters not affiliated with either major political party blame the parents for breaking the law. But 60 percent of Democrats see the federal government at fault for enforcing the law.
The policy of separating immigrant children from their parents who have crossed the border illegally, in place before Trump took office, created a national outcry once Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the administration would move forward with a zero-tolerance enforcement of the law. Critics still seemed unsatisfied as Trump signed an executive order to end the policy this week, just one day before his wife, first lady Melania Trump headed to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas on Thursday to personally view child detention centers.
The Rasmussen survey of 1000 likely voters, conducted on June 19-20, also indicated that 54 percent agree with Trump when he said, “The United States will not be a migrant camp. And it will not be a refugee-holding facility – it won’t be.”
Another poll question asking if the Trump administration is too aggressive or not aggressive enough in trying to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States, found 75 percent of Democrats thought the administration is too aggressive, a view shared by only 23 percent of Republicans.
