ABC is reportedly getting closer to the reality of a spinoff of the popular “Roseanne” sitcom, sans the show’s namesake, actress and comedian Roseann Barr.
That possibility being enhanced by reports Barr is “seriously considering” forgoing any profits from the new show, according to Page Six.
The reboot of “Roseanne” was cancelled by ABC after an ill-advised tweet from Barr that likened Obama royalty member Valerie Jarrett to a character in the film, “Planet of the Apes.”
The comedian apologized for the tweet and said she was not aware that Jarrett was an African-American — the fair-skinned Obama lieutenant was born in Iran.

Talk of a spinoff is said to center on the character Darlene Conner, played by actress Sara Gilbert, who was quick to condemn Barr’s tweet.
Barr said to be “hunkered down” with her parents in Utah, according to a source close to the star.

“Roseanne feels so bad about her antics she is trying to figure out a way to help people harmed by the cancellation,” the source told Page Six . “She’s considering giving up financial and creative participation in a spinoff so the people she loves can have jobs. Barr holding on is a stumbling block.”
In a cryptic tweet, Barr said last week she was “making restitution for the pain I have caused.”

It’s not clear if this was in reference to her potentially letting go of any rights to a spinoff show.
The initial reaction online suggests it’s not likely to make any difference whether Barr allows a spinoff to proceed, as a new show without her is not likely to go far.
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
It's the right thing to do to save the show & all the jobs, but also for the audience ❤️ @therealroseanne @nypost https://t.co/WglDTvg9Q0

No Thanks. @therealroseanne was fired for purely political purposes. This will not go unanswered. She was the show and there is no show without her. @ABC deserves to lose money and lose it bigly. https://t.co/pAkRFQFET5

There is no #spinoff @ABCNetwork – it would be a #ratings bomb without @therealroseanne sorry no one is tuning in to watch @THEsaragilbert – there is a reason the show is called Roseanne and not Sarah ???

This is some special kind of BULLSHIT. I would never watch, especially since traitor Gilbert had this planned before any tweets. As a matter of fact, I won’t watch ANYTHING any cast member is in again, EVER pic.twitter.com/cHo6OsGeV7

The original show, I enjoyed, UNTIL, Roseanne made a mockery of our National Anthem with her so-called singing. Men and women died for our flag, and all she did was disrespect the flag and what it stands for. The reboot was enjoyable, but would have been better without her!

ABC ratings down big already, you think “half” the viewers will give it a min? Hell no, go for it. Low rating don lemon would beat you. & He is the lowest rated

No one will watch Roseanne without Roseanne in it. Goodman maybe, but Darleen and dj are worthless solo

This will not end well for the spinoff. It’s a non-starter.
