Democrat lawmaker known for anti-Semitic remarks bails on Holocaust museum tour early

A Washington, D.C. councilman who blamed Jews for snow last month took a tour of a Holocaust museum that went about as badly as expected.

D.C. Council member Trayon White left in the middle of a scheduled tour of Washington’s Holocaust Memorial Museum on Thursday, doing little to improve his anti-Semitic image. White was found standing alone on the sidewalk outside the museum halfway through the 90 minute tour, according to The Washington Post.

Last month, the Democrat representing Ward 8 sparked an outcry after suggesting that wealthy Jews caused a snowstorm.

“Man, it just started snowing out of nowhere this morning, man,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “Y’all better pay attention to this climate control, man, this climate manipulation. And D.C. keep talking about, ‘We a resilient city.’ And that’s a model based off the Rothschilds controlling the climate to create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities, man. Be careful.”

When he was present at the tour Thursday, White seemed to have some trouble understanding some of the images he saw. A 1935 photo depicted a German woman being marched through the streets of Norden surrounded by Nazi stormtroopers and wearing a sign from her neck: “I am a German girl and allowed myself to be defiled by a Jew.”

“Are they protecting her?” Ward asked tour guide, Lynn Williams.

“No,” she said. “They’re marching her through.”

“Marching through is protecting,” White replied.

“I think they’re humiliating her,” Williams answered.

A little later in the tour, White and his staff stopped at a photo of Catholic clergy in Poland being executed by a German firing squad. “Were they actually manufacturing these weapons?” White asked.

He disappeared moments later.

He told Rabbi Batya Glazer, who was on the tour and texted to him to find out where he went, that he hoped to meet her outside but was about to leave for a Ward 8 event, the Washington Post reported.

White’s seven remaining staff members continued the tour without him but apparently didn’t fare much better with their interpretation of the images. When viewing an exhibit on the Warsaw Ghetto, the rabbi explained the walling in of Polish Jews, prompting one of White’s aides to ask if it was similar to “a gated community.”

“Yeah, I wouldn’t call it a gated community,” Glazer responded. “More like a prison.”

At the end of the tour, the rabbi graciously praised the councilman for being “very sincere in wanting to come here,” but admitted he still didn’t understanding his exit.

“I do not know what happened, and I find it confusing,” she said.

“I’ll be coming back to see more of the museum. I didn’t get a chance to see the whole thing,” White said, when he was found staning by himself outside of the museum. “But I think it’s a lot of education here, a lot of synergy here between what happened to the Jewish community and the African community.”

According to The Washington Post:

Asked why he left the tour halfway and where he went, he said nothing and held his cellphone to his ear.

Asked whether he had reassessed his comments about the Rothschilds in light of what he had just seen, White walked east on Independence Avenue.

“This opportunity has given me the chance to meet a lot of great Jews, a lot of people. A lot of good Jews that I’ve never had the chance to meet before,” he said after a long silence. “It’s an awesome experience.”

Twitter users found White’s behavior and ignorance “stunning and disturbing.”
