LaWana Mayfield, a Democrat Charlotte city councilwoman who compared President Trump to Hitler, floated a conspiracy theory claiming the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were a hoax staged by the U.S. government.
Mayfield pushed the crackpot claims in an April 16 Facebook post, where she wrote: “Ever since the moment that the towers fell, people have been saying that it was a controlled demolition. Now we might have academic evidence to prove the theory as fact!”
Mayfield added: “I am still waiting for someone to produce pieces of the planes that opened the doors for US Citizens to lose all privacy rights.” She then linked to an article titled “It’s Official: European Scientific Journal Concludes 9/11 Was A Controlled Demolition.”
Mayfield has since edited her comments, but did not delete the post or apologize for claiming the U.S. government had intentionally murdered almost 3,000 people.
“This was NOT shared to cause controversy yet it has,” Mayfield huffed. “Freedom of speech allows you to share your thoughts and many have done that below.”
After her callous remarks fueled widespread outrage, she claimed she did not believe 9/11 was a hoax, but then doubled-down on her conspiracy theory to a local Charlotte radio station.
“I believe this nation chose to take a horrific act and use it to not only create a way through government to spy on the American people, but also to privatize a lot of the work that is happening on the ground,” Mayfield told WFAE.

Angry Americans launched a petition on Change.org demanding Mayfield’s resignation:
“This theory was completely and thoroughly debunked in a 2017 study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. It conclusively proved what most of the nation saw that day–the towers collapsed due to the massive damage from the impact of two large jumbo jets.
By giving her imprimatur to this conspiracy theory, Mayfield has brought shame and disgrace upon herself, her district, her city, and her state. It is simply not acceptable for an elected official to use his or her platform to promote such claptrap.
Mayfield needs to spare herself, the people of Charlotte, and the people of North Carolina further embarrassment by resigning.”
This is not the first time that LaWana Mayfield — whose hero is race-baiter Maxine Waters — has made headlines for her inflammatory social-media postings. In October 2017, Mayfield compared President Trump to Adolf Hitler on Twitter.
“For all who read about Hitler, you are Now living how he reigned in #45,” she tweeted with the hashtags “Idiot In Chief” and “Clinical Sociopath.”

Meyfield followed up with another tweet, where she called President Trump “a Disgrace to the Nation.”

If LaWana wants to see something truly disgraceful, she should start by looking in a mirror.
