Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents lost a man described as a “violent deportee” when he gave them the slip at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport.
The prisoner, who was previously arrested on a weapons charge, was about to be escorted onto a plane Tuesday as ICE agents removed his handcuffs while going through airport security, according to the New York Daily News.
Agents had taken the unidentified man through X-ray screening before he somehow escaped at Gate B23 in Terminal 4 around 8:30 p.m., according to law enforcement sources.
An agency police spokesman said the escape was reported to Port Authority police officers at about 9:15 p.m.
Surveillance video captured the man getting into a taxi and leaving the airport, a law enforcement source told the Daily News.
A spokesperson for ICE did not immediately reply to a request for comment from the publication.
