Breaking: ‘Accidental shooting’ at Alabama high school kills 17-year-old girl and prompts lockdown

The Associated Press is reporting that a 17 year-old girl was killed in an “accidental shooting” Huffman High School in Birmingham, Alabama.

It is being reported that the victim was a student. Two others were “hit by gunfire and taken for medical attention,” according to Birmingham Fire Department Capt. Harold Watson.

The incident was called an “accidental shooting” by Birmingham Police Sgt. Bryan Shelton.

“Two students were involved in a shooting during dismissal,” a statement from the school district said. “The school was placed on brief lockdown and police were called.”

The fatal shooting was the second school-related incident on Wednesday that garnered national attention. A teenager earlier in the day brought a homemade pipe bomb to school in St. George, Utah. The teenager was reportedly drawn to the terror group ISIS.

“The boy was arrested Monday night after Pine View High School in the city of St. George was evacuated for two hours that afternoon while the FBI and a bomb squad investigated. Police declined to identify the arrested teen or give his age,” NBC News reported.

“Authorities said additional charges also are pending against the teen as a suspect in the raising of the Islamic State group’s flag on a pole at another Utah high school last month just after the Florida mass school shooting that was followed by numerous other threats to schools around the U.S.,” the report continued.

No one was hurt in the pipe bomb incident after a backpack was found at the school. The boy was arrested and charged with “manufacture, possession, sale, use or attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction,” according to the St. George police statement.

Following the Parkland mass shooting, every school incident is a painful reminder to many Americans of the need to secure our nation’s educational institutions.  The fatal shooting in Alabama only serves as a reminder of the lives at stake.

This is a breaking news story. More information will be added as forthcoming.
