Trey Gowdy isn’t done yet.
The retiring South Carolina congressman, chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is taking up the cause of appointing a second Special Counsel to investigate agency bias at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and whether that has played any role in its investigations.
At the heart of a potential investigation into the FBI would be the role of the Steele dossier in the application for a FISA surveillance warrant for former Trump aide Carter Page.
While it has been claimed that the Australian ambassador Alexander Downer launched the probe into the Trump campaign, and not the Steele dossier itself, there are fresh questions about Downer being a longtime Clinton ally.
“I can’t control whether or not y’all think this is about Hillary Clinton. That’s what the [inspector general] right now is looking at is that email case. That’s not what we’re asking for,” Gowdy told reporters, referring to the DOJ’s Inspector General Michael Horowitz, and his probe into FBI decision during the Clinton email investigation.
“I don’t know if any of the witnesses were hired by President Obama. And they certainly weren’t hired by Hillary Clinton,” he added.
Gowdy appeared on Fox News Tuesday to clarify the reasons for a second special counsel to investigate the FBI.
“What changed for me there are two dozen witnesses that Horowitz would not have access to. Let the inspector general do it,” Gowdy said. “Mike Horowitz has no jurisdiction over witnesses who never worked there. When I counted up 24 witnesses that he would not be able to access were he to investigate it, only one conclusion. That’s special counsel.”
“Who is on that list?”
“Everybody from Jim Comey to McCabe, Sidney Blumenthal,” he said. “Anybody who no longer works for the Department of Justice or the FBI. State Department employees were feeding information to Fusion GPS. Anyone who is not an employee of DOJ, Horowitz doesn’t have subpoena power for them.”
Gowdy isn’t the only high-ranking Republican to call for a second special counsel. He is joined by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte.
