ICE chief blasts Oakland mayor for putting her community at risk, let slip ‘800 criminal threats’ for politics

The Department of Justice is looking into possible obstruction charges against the mayor of a sanctuary city in California who warned illegal immigrants of an impending raid.

The acting director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Thomas Homan, blasted Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf on Wednesday, telling “Fox & Friends” that the agency is “reviewing” the mayor’s actions.

The Democrat mayor issued a warning on Twitter Sunday, giving illegal immigrants a heads-up that ICE was “preparing to conduct an operation in the Bay Area, including Oakland,” which would be “starting soon, as within the next 24 hours.”

“What she did is no better than a gang lookout yelling police when a police cruiser comes to the neighborhood except she did it to entire community of the this is beyond the pale,” Homan told Fox News. “This is a whole new low to intentionally warn criminals that law enforcement is coming. I can’t believe it happened.”

Homan blamed Schaaf’s warning for the inability of the agency to secure the arrest of over 800 illegal immigrants and threats to public safety.

“She intentionally put law enforcement officers at risk. Being a law enforcement officer is dangerous enough. But to give criminals a head’s up we’re coming next 24 hours, increases the risk,” Homan said. “There’s over 800 significant public safety threat criminals … that we are unable to locate because of that warning, so that community’s a lot less safe than it would’ve been.”

Schaaf doubled down on her actions, refusing to apologize, and tweeted on Tuesday that “It is Oakland’s legal right to be a sanctuary city and we have not broken any laws. We believe our community is safer when families stay together.”

The activist mayor also blasted the immigration crackdown as “racist” during a news conference in her office Wednesday.

“I hope we take this moment to recognize that we have to fight against the racist myth that the Trump administration is trying to perpetuate — that immigrants are dangerous criminals,” Schaaf said, according to SF Gate. “There is nothing further from the truth. This is racist and it is false. Ample evidence shows that American-born citizens are actually more likely to commit crimes than immigrants.

Twitter users were not buying Schaaf’s rhetoric and, joining Homan in his criticism, also slammed the liberal mayor for her twisted priorities.
