More Americans blame school shooting on government failure than guns: Survey

Contrary to the left’s raging rhetoric, most Americans agree that government failure is to blame for the mass shooting at a Florida high earlier school this month.

According to the latest Rasmussen Reports survey, 54 percent of Americans believe “the failure of government agencies” is more to blame for the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which left 17 people dead, than guns.

“Which is more to blame for the mass shooting at the Florida high school – the failure of government agencies to respond to numerous warning signs from the prospective killer or the lack of adequate gun control?” the survey asked 1,000 “American Adults” on February 25-26.

Guns and a lack of “adequate gun control” was blamed for the shooting by only 33 percent of those surveyed while another 11 percent were unsure what led to the deadly attack in Parkland when a 19-year old gunman, with a long history of behavior issues and police reports, opened fire in his former school.

The number of survey respondents who blamed government failure spiked up to 61 percent while those who blamed guns dropped to 23 percent when the survey focused on Americans “who have children of elementary or secondary school age.”

A previous Rasmussen Reports poll showed that “Americans aren’t convinced stricter gun laws will reduce crime and don’t trust the government to enforce those laws.”

According to Rasmussen:

Those who have been following the news Very Closely see the failure of government agencies as more to blame for the Florida killings by a 54% to 35% margin.

Middle-aged voters are the most likely to view the government as more to blame.

Married adults and those with children in the home are even more likely to blame the government than those who are not married and don’t have children living with them.

Seventy-five percent (75%) of Republicans and 55% of adults not affiliated with either major political party see government failure as more to blame than a lack of adequate gun control, but just 36% of Democrats agree. Fifty percent (50%) of Democrats say a lack of sufficient gun control is more at fault.

And with the Broward County Sheriff’s Department as well as the FBI seeming to drop the ball on dozens of warning signs and tips about the killer, Nikolas Cruz, it seems criticism against government agencies is warranted in this case.

Cruz complied with gun control laws and passed a background check at the gun store when he purchased his weapons. But he also completely ignored laws declaring the school a gun free zone – reinforcing the argument that criminals won’t obey yet another law that takes guns away from law-abiding citizens.
