One core assumption that has permeated the entire Russian probe fiasco is that Donald Trump would never testify under oath to Mueller team investigators, unless compelled by Congress under force of law.
Wrong assumption. On Wednesday, the president surprised his opposition by expressing his willingness to comply with investigators and testify under oath to Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Donald Trump said about testifying under oath, as reported by the New York Times.
The president’s comment was delivered to reporters at the doorway of his chief of staff’s office, the newspaper reports, before he departs to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The president did have one pretty weighty condition.
Trump said, as cited by the Times, that “he would be willing to answer questions under oath, but not until after asking whether Hillary Clinton, his 2016 campaign rival, has spoken under oath to the F.B.I. in the investigation into her use of a private email server.”
We’ll see if Hillary Clinton would consider that to be a fair trade.
