U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is under fire from conservatives after proclaiming “Common Core is dead” while failing to do anything about it.
“I agree – and have always agreed – with President Trump on this: Common Core is a disaster. And at the U.S. Department of Education, Common Core is dead,” DeVos said during a speech at the American Enterprise Institute on January 16.
DeVos echoed the sentiments of many educators and parents across the country, which is that the U.S. educational system is broken, as evidenced by the dismal test scores American students get compared to their peers in Asia and Europe.
“Federally mandated assessments. Federal money. Federal standards. All originated in Washington, and none solved the problem,” DeVos said. “Too many of America’s students are still unprepared.”
Despite her condemnation of Common Core, “at least 37 states” are still using Common Core standards or its “rebrands” as of 2016, Education Week reported.
“That’s a nice sentiment, but what is Secretary DeVos going to do about it?” Shane Vander Hart of Truth in American Education said. “If this is something she truly believed she would support the repeal of ESEA [Elementary and Secondary Education Act] instead of touting it in its current form as the ‘Every Student Succeeds Act.’”

President Trump has repeatedly slammed Common Core, saying he wants to end it because it’s ineffective.
“I like the fact of getting rid of Common Core. We have to end it,” Trump said in 2017. “We have to bring education local.”
Alex Newman of the Freedom Project said the U.S. education system as it is now will continue to churn out “dumb” students unless Betsy DeVos does something about it.
“Even if Common Core were ripped out from the roots, the federally controlled government ‘education’ system in America would continue to dumb down and indoctrinate students on an industrial scale — literally threatening the future of the nation,” Newman wrote.
Many parents agree that allowing the federal government to mandate education standards is a disaster. Case in point: Children in some public middle schools across the United States are being brainwashed by being forced to take lessons in Islam — to the exclusion of all other religions.

Hilsenrath said her child’s “world cultures and geography class” only discusses Islam but doesn’t teach about the Christian and Jewish religions. School administrators told Hilsenrath that Islam is part of the Chatham Middle School’s “core curriculum.”
