Oh, by the way: That Republican senator who met with shrink about Trump’s mental health? Totally accidental

A Yale psychiatry professor who claimed a Republican senator secretly met with her to discuss President Trump’s mental health admits she exaggerated her claims, and confessed the “meeting” with “accidental” and “incidental.”

“It wasn’t arranged in advance,” Dr. Bandy Lee confessed to the Weekly Standard. “It was accidental. It was incidental.”

Lee made headlines this week amid breathless media reports that she had met in December with a dozen Democratic members of Congress who are worried about President Trump’s mental health.

Lee claimed one of the lawmakers was a Republican senator, whom she refused to name. She claimed the exchange with the GOP senator took place in a Senate office building on December 5, but refused to say whether it occurred in a hallway, where tourists incidentally run into lawmakers.

“I won’t comment. I’m sorry,” Lee said.

Even more stunning was Lee’s backpedaling from her initial statements claiming the Republican senator agreed with her and Democrats that President Trump was mentally unstable and unfit to serve.

When asked directly by the Weekly Standard if the GOP senator agreed with her assessment of Trump’s mental fitness, she replied: “No. I mean, they engaged us, but that’s about it.”

Those lukewarm comments are a stark contrast to the case she presents in her book, “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President,” which Democrats are now using to discredit the president.

Lee’s backpedaling also contradicts a Politico story, which claimed the psychiatrist was “summoned” to Capitol Hill by lawmakers, including the nameless Republican senator.

Politico hyped the Trump-is-unstable narrative being pushed by mainstream media by claiming:

“Lawmakers concerned about President Donald Trump’s mental state summoned Yale University psychiatry professor Dr. Bandy X. Lee to Capitol Hill last month for two days of briefings about his recent behavior.

In private meetings with more than a dozen members of Congress held on Dec. 5 and 6, Lee briefed lawmakers — all Democrats except for one Republican senator, whom Lee declined to identify. Her professional warning to Capitol Hill: “He’s going to unravel, and we are seeing the signs.”

Lee also warned, “We feel that the rush of tweeting is an indication of his falling apart under stress. Trump is going to get worse and will become uncontainable with the pressures of the presidency.”

Tellingly, Politico declined to comment when contacted by the Weekly Standard about Dr. Bandy Lee’s conflicting comments.

Lee joins a growing chorus of discredited authors and media personalities who are attacking President Trump to sell books or raise their profiles.

The coordinated attacks on Trump’s mental health appear to be a sign that the media is pivoting away from the “Trump-Russia collusion” narrative after a year-long investigation has yielded no evidence of collusion.

Author Michael Wolff scored countless press mentions this week with his book “Fire and Fury” because it feeds the liberal narrative of Trump as a bumbling fool who has dementia and is unstable.

However, even liberals like CNN’s Jake Tapper criticized “Fire and Fury” for its numerous factual errors, which Trump supporters gleefully pointed out. Oh well, back to the drawing board for libs.
