In a New Year message to President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for “pragmatic cooperation” between the United States and his nation.
Putin called for a constructive dialogue between the two nations in a telegram message Saturday according to a Kremlin news release, hoping Russia and the U.S. could develop a “pragmatic cooperation aimed at long-term perspective” on the basis of “equality and mutual respect,” the Independent reported.
“The development a constructive Russian-U.S. dialogue is particularly important for strengthening strategic stability in the world and finding the optimal answers to global threats and challenges,” Putin noted.
Relations between the two nations have sunk to a post-Cold War low, with a Kremlin spokesman noting Friday that ongoing “Russophobia” in Washington amid investigations into alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign, have led to disappointing relations between them.
In Putin’s annual greetings statement to foreign heads of state and government last year, he noticeably addressed then-President-elect Trump, and not President Barack Obama. Putin was optimistic at the time that the incoming administration would have a positive relationship with the Kremlin.

Despite the ongoing witch hunt as critics try to prove that Trump colluded with Russia in meddling in the U.S. election, no evidence has been found and Trump has instead seemed to defy the Kremlin at every turn.
