Trump is giving new meaning to the saying “There’s a new sheriff in town.”
Candidate Trump praised America’s police officers after eight years of being criticized by the Obama administration, and despite escalating tension with the FBI and DOJ over apparent politically motivated officials, Trump is still singing the praises of the law enforcement community’s rank-and-file.
Former President Obama often pulled wild acts of double speak as he “thanked” the nation’s police officers while praising the often hostile anti-cop movement Black Lives Matter.
Making good on his campaign promises, President Trump on the other hand, has made it clear where he stands and his policies are a welcome change as Fox News contributor Ron Hosko pointed out in Christmas opinion piece.
“Police and sheriffs are members of our community,” President Trump said in a Joint Address to Congress soon after taking office.

“They’re friends and neighbors, they’re mothers and fathers, sons and daughters – and they leave behind loved ones every day who worry about whether or not they’ll come home safe and sound. We must support the incredible men and women of law enforcement.”
Trump took a not-so-subtle dig at the previous administration’s race-fueled divisive tactics, and said the nation must change course.
“[Americans] must work with, not against – not against – the men and women of law enforcement,” Trump said.
“We must build bridges of cooperation and trust – not drive the wedge of disunity.”

President Trump’s focus on law and order has already yielded meaningful results. The President’s tough stance on illegal immigration and promise of a border wall has reduced the influx of illegal border crossings to a 46-year low.
Trump’s head-on approach to tackling the opioid crisis is also a welcome change for law enforcement officers overwhelmed by the drug problem that has become an epidemic in parts of the country.
The President also gave law enforcement a huge nod of support by lighting the White House blue during National Police Week.

In contrast, hours before five Dallas police officers were gunned down by a madman in July 2016, then-President Obama defended Black Lives Matter and said black youths were vulnerable to brutal treatment by cops.
Obama’s statements and actions made it clear to many where he stood on supporting U.S. law enforcement.

While Trump’s changes have been welcomed by much of the law enforcement community, the president still faces staunch criticism and has been continually called a racist for his hardline stance on violent crime, and illegal immigration.
As Hosko pointed out, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been Trump’s ally in his no-nonsense approach, even rounding up hundreds of dangerous MS-13 gang members who entered the country illegally.
The arrests of MS-13 gang members surged by 83 percent and captures of illegals with criminal records surged by 92 percent, The Washington Examiner reported.
But, Sessions’ deep Southern roots puts him in liberal crosshairs and makes him a “racist” by default.

That didn’t stop Sessions from helping Trump reverse the Obama-era policy of restricting law enforcement from life-saving military equipment. The decision to reverse Obama’s dangerous policy took place during last summer’s violent hurricane season, but became a vital life-saving resource after the horrific shooting tragedies in Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, Texas, Hosko noted.
