Despite attempts to downplay impeachment rhetoric, House Democrats seem to be readying themselves for a battle against President Trump that they hope could end in his removal from office.
By a wide margin, Democrats chose Rep. Jerrold Nadler to fill their top spot on the House Judiciary Committee apparently because, as a constitutional law expert, the New York congressman could be best suited for an impeachment case against Trump.
According to The Washington Post’s Paul Kane, the selection of Nadler is “the clearest sign yet of how seriously House Democrats consider the possibility of a full-blown constitutional showdown with Trump.”
While many Democrats avoid publicly talking about impeaching the president, Kane noted that Nadler’s constitutional background would serve them well if they retake control of the House in 2018.
“There is nobody better prepared, if the president messes around with the Constitution, to handle it than Jerry Nadler,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said after the vote.

Stepping in to the seat vacated by outgoing Michigan Rep. John Conyers Jr., who resigned over sexual harassment allegations, Nadler brings his constitutional background and his past battles with Trump. As part of the New York State Assembly, Nadler impeded Trump’s efforts in the 1980s to develop on New York’s Upper West Side.
He has continued to be a vocal critic of the president.

Democrats must “prepare for the coming storm,” Rep. Gerald E. Connolly said, according to the Washington Post.
The Virginia Democrat noted that “the constitutional argument” was a main reason for the broad support of Nadler, who won in a secret ballot 118 to 72.
And despite Democrats’ caution in public statements, Kane points out in his piece that “it’s hard not to conclude that Nadler was given his new job for a singular reason.”
“It’s something I think he was made for,” New York Rep. Joseph Crowley said. “He’s at the right place at the right time and when we need him most.”
