Former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who resigned from the Trump administration in February, was formally charged by Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Friday.
Mueller charges Flynn with “willfully and knowingly” making “false, fictitious and fraudulent statements” to the FBI about his conversation with the Russian ambassador.

As reported by CBS News, Flynn will enter a plea of “guilty” to Mueller’s charge. Flynn would be the second official connected to the Trump campaign to enter a “guilty” plea. Former foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos also pleaded guilty to making a false statement.
There are a few implications for Flynn’s guilty plea. The first is that he is pleading guilty to a relatively low-level charge, holding out the possibility that he has struck a deal with Mueller about information he has about the Trump campaign.
Also, the charge comes out approximately 10 months after we knew Flynn lied about his conversation with Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak on a phone call, indicating that an illegal wiretap or leak was the method used to determine he had lied.
Flynn has been processed at the FBI’s Washington field office and is due in court on Friday.
