It’s beyond sick: Missouri couple in police custody for putting a baby in a microwave

A Missouri couple is facing child abuse charges for allegedly putting their baby in a microwave.

As unbelievable as it may sound, the man and woman from Park Hills thought to imitate a television commercial by allegedly placing their less-than four month old son in the microwave and dropping him, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Derick Boyce-Slezak and Mikala Boyce-Slezak were jailed on $500,000 bond after being charged Tuesday with felony abuse or neglect of a child.

Doctors at a St. Louis hospital emergency room found second-degree facial burns and head injuries on the baby who was just over three months old at the time the parents, both 22, brought him in supposedly for a rash. The couple claimed the burns were caused by a cleaning agent, according to court documents.

According to the St. Louis-Dispatch:

At a hearing on Monday, Mikala invoked her right against self-incrimination when asked about the baby’s injuries, the documents say. Derick did not testify.

But someone with the Children’s Division of the Missouri Department of Social Services testified at the hearing that Mikala Boyce-Slezak had earlier stated that she intended to testify that the head wounds were a result of Derick dropping the infant while trying to imitate what he saw on a television commercial.

The Children’s Division employee also stated that Mikala had claimed she had reason to believe Derick had placed the infant in a microwave and turned it on for a “short period of time.”

The couple has a daughter as well but had waived custody of her soon after she was born in 2016, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Reaction to the disturbing story on social media was as expected.
