With Christmas around the corner, it’s sobering to realize that some children want nothing more than a winter coat or food.
“I’m a boy. I am 6 years old. This Cristmis I want food,” read one child’s wish list on Things of My Very Own, a nonprofit group that helps abused and neglected children.
Another wish list for a 5-year-old boy read: “Wish: Anything Batman. Needs: A Winter Coat.”
This year, Things of My Very Own is collecting holiday gifts for needy children and their families, and posted some of the wish lists on Facebook.
The children want simple things to make their lives a little brighter, since many were removed from their homes by Child Protective Services with only the clothes on their backs.
“They were removed by protective services,” volunteer Claudia Gray-Nilsen told WNYT. “And sometimes they are removed wrapped in a [bed]sheet.”

“One little boy asked for feminine hygiene products for his younger sister,” said Rayn Boncie, the founder and CEO of Things of My Very Own in Schenectady, New York.
Boncie said her group helps 5,000 to 7,000 children in the New York region each year. She’s touched that kind people from as far away as Europe have contacted her to help.
“This morning a man in Italy reached out to us,” Boncie said. “One woman from Switzerland reached out to the pizza place where we have the gift tags available to sponsor.”
Anthony Ditoro, who lives in Schenectady, said he bought gifts for two kids this week.
“When you basically have more than you can ask for, you gotta share,” he said.
