How ‘Saturday Night Live’ handled SNL alum Al Franken’s sexual assault scandal might not be what you expected

“Saturday Night Live” tried to buck its partisan image by mocking Democratic Senator Al Franken, who was caught groping radio host Leeann Tweeden in a seedy photo.

“I know this photo looks bad, but remember — it also is bad,” Colin Jost said on Weekend Update.

Jost continued: “Sure, this was taken before Franken ran for public office, but it was also taken after he was a sophomore in high school. It’s pretty hard to be like, ‘Oh come on, he didn’t know anything — he was only 55!’”

“Weekend Update” co-host Michael Che quipped: “Didn’t the troops in Afghanistan have it hard enough without having to sit through sketch comedy? I mean, people can barely even stay up to watch sketches after Weekend Update.”

Che was responding to Leeann Tweeden’s allegations that Franken had groped and kissed her when the two were rehearsing for a comedy skit during a 2006 USO tour.

At the time, Al Franken was a writer and performer on “Saturday Night Live,” a job he held for 15 years before becoming a senator.

“I felt violated,” Tweeden recalled. “Embarrassed. Belittled. Humiliated. How dare anyone grab my breasts like this and think it’s funny?”

Detractors tried to discredit Tweeden by bringing up her past as a Playboy model, as if that means she deserves to be sexually assaulted. Meanwhile, Leann has done a lot over the years to support U.S. troops because her husband is a military pilot.

Like gorgeous First Lady Melania Trump, Tweeden is not ashamed of her modeling past. Or of being a beautiful conservative hottie.

It’s noteworthy that “Saturday Night Live” mocked Al Franken because the left-wing show came under fire for ignoring the bombshell Harvey Weinstein sex scandal when it first surfaced.

Following heavy backlash, SNL did an entire skit on Weinstein the following week.

Franken has apologized to Tweeden, but it’s unlikely he’ll face any consequences for his actions. While many liberals publicly condemned his behavior, none called for him to step down. Conservatives reacted by saying that’s a typically hypocritical reaction from the left.

Meanwhile, Tweeden said Al Franken’s misbehavior isn’t a partisan issue.

“This is not about donkeys and elephants, this is about right and wrong,” Leeann said on The View. “This is about when you don’t want somebody to put their hands on you, no is no.”
