Reporters at Thursday’s White House briefing peppered press secretary Sarah Sanders with questions about Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore.
In fact, the questions about the Republican candidate, who has been accused by several women of sexual misconduct with minors years ago, far outweighed questions about Democratic Sen. Al Franken.
The Minnesota lawmaker was accused of groping and forcibly kissing a sports commentator when, as a comedian, he traveled with her during a USO tour of Vietnam in December 2006. Franken issued his “sincerest apologies” for his actions on Thursday.
When a question finally was raised about Franken and the allegations against him, it came as part of a double question that included the mistrial for Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez.
“On the other side of the aisle, does the president have a response to the allegations against Sen. Al Franken and also the mistrial over Sen. Bob Menendez?” a correspondent asked.
The brief reply from Sanders was that President Trump was pleased with the Senate looking into the allegations against Franken, calling the new ethics investigation an “appropriate action.” Sanders added that she had not yet spoken to the president about Menendez.
The Daily Caller conducted a kind of study on the media’s questions and found that Sanders was “asked 13 questions about Moore, 10 questions about tax reform, seven questions related to Trump’s trip to Asia, three questions about lifting the ban on elephant trophy hunting, three questions about other topics, and just one question about Sen. Franken.”
The questions that were used in calculating were only ones that elicited a direct response from Sanders, not all the questions that were called out.
The accusations against the senator obviously received very little attention in the White House press briefing room on Thursday, despite Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s announcement of a Senate Ethics Committee probe into the matter. Franken even called for an investigation into himself.
