Politico describes a Jewish mayor as having ‘deep pockets and a nose for the spotlight’

Politico described a Jewish mayor Wednesday by using age-old stereotypes that have long been hailed as “anti-Semitic.”

The outlet ran a story about Miami, Fla. Mayor Phillip Levine, who is running for governor, under the headline “With deep pockets and a nose for the spotlight, Miami Beach mayor enters governor’s race.”

“Miami Beach Mayor Phillip Levine officially announced his bid for governor on Wednesday, bringing his personal fortune and knack for making headlines to a Democratic race where the three top candidates have struggled to gain traction and money,” the story begins.

The headline for the piece delved into two major stereotypes about Jewish people: the history surrounding their noses and the belief that all Jewish people are rich. A major stereotype that Jewish people have combated is that they are all wealthy and have “deep pockets.”

As for Politico referring to the mayor having a “nose” for politics, Jewish people for centuries have dodged the stereotype that they can be identified by their noses.

“For the rest of the century, and for several decades beyond, the shape of Jews’ noses in art remained too varied to constitute markers of identity. That is, Jews sported many different kinds of ‘bad’ noses—some long and tapering, others snout-like—but the same noses appeared on many ‘bad’ non-Jews as well, and there was no single, identifiable ‘Jewish’ nose,” a New Yorker write-up noted about the stereotype.

Politico did not return The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment in time for publication.
