NFL commissioner Roger Goodell met with team owners and players in New York on Tuesday.
The meeting comes amidst nationwide outcry over the league’s handling of player protests taking place during the national anthem at the pregame of football games.
Goodell came out of two separate meetings, then told the press that he never asked teams or players to change pregame behavior. The league-wide protests are being interpreted by many as disrespectful to the military, the national anthem, and the flag, thus alienating millions of fans.
“We did not ask for it,” Goodell said, referring to any changes to the league’s handling of the protests.
So, what did Goodell and the NFL owners and players discuss? How to empower NFL players to raise more “awareness” by using their platform as professional athletes to comment on social issues.
“We spent today talking about the issues players are trying to bring attention to. Issues in our communities, to make our communities better,” Goodell said.
Perhaps Goodell should concentrate on making his league’s products more attractive to fans, of whom a significant percentage are turning off the games and leaving stadiums in droves.

It might be different if the NFL players had a well-substantiated point (setting aside the extremely divisive choice to carry out protests at the time of the national anthem). It is highly disputed, based on available data, that police use of deadly force against minorities is at a higher rate than against all other Americans.
Harvard economist Roland Fryer, Jr., in an article in the New York Times, explained that black Americans are less likely to be shot by police than white Americans.
“It is the most surprising result of my career,” Fryer told the Times.
Research by Fryer published at Yale University broadly echoes the conclusion:
On the most extreme use of force – officer-involved shootings – we find no racial differences in either the raw data or when contextual factors are taken into account.

In other words, it is highly likely that when it comes to the racially motivated police shootings there actually is no “there there.” In order for there to be “awareness-raising,” there has to be some general awareness of facts, and not fictions, being purveyed.
It appears that the only thing the NFL is accomplishing with its allowance of player protests, when it does not tolerate many other displays of individuality during games, is turning off millions among its fan base and angering many more.
No wonder its favorability is crashing among Americans. The NFL has gone from a beloved American pastime to one of the most despised leagues among all the major sports.
“From the end of August to the end of September, the favorable ratings for the NFL have dropped from 57 percent to 44 percent, and it has the highest unfavorable rating – 40 percent – of any big sport, according to the Winston Group survey provided exclusively to Secrets,” an analysis published by the Washington Examiner in October reported.
Roger Goodell had a chance to try to fix the public relations nightmare. Yet, he still refuses to even acknowledge it exists, since it’s largely taking place among people whom he considers to be second-class citizens – also known as “normal Americans.”
It is just another reason why NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will go down in history as one of the worst in the league’s history.
