(**Warning: Graphic photo ahead.) The Las Vegas police department released horrifying bodycam footage of several officers during the October 1 mass shooting at Mandalay Bay Resort.
Videos show police frantically running toward gunfire while yelling at bystanders to seek cover. There was mass chaos because authorities initially could not figure where the gunshots were coming from.
When police finally breached gunman Stephen Paddock‘s room, he had already shot himself to death. Leaked photos circulating on social media show his lifeless body lying on the floor next to a trove of guns (warning: graphic).
Authorities said Paddock had a total of 47 guns, 23 of which were in the hotel room. Twelve of those guns had been modified to shoot up to 800 rounds per minute.

When Paddock’s rampage was done, he had murdered 59 people and injured more than 500. It was the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Police have not confirmed if Paddock, 64, left a suicide note, but a leaked photo shows a note on a table next to his dead body.
Paddock had fired at a crowd of concert-goers at a country-music festival — sniper-style — from his hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay resort. He had been staying in the hotel since September 28, meticulously planning the grotesque murders.
Authorities are baffled by the lack of an apparent motive. Paddock’s brother, Eric Paddock, claimed Stephen had no political or religious affiliation, and said his brother was an “intelligent, successful” person who was a multi-millionaire.
The focus has now shifted to Paddock’s live-in girlfriend, Marilou Danley, 62. Danley was in the Philippines at the time of the shooting, but authorities consider her a “person of interest” after a cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives were found at the home she had shared with Paddock in Mesquite, Nevada.
Danley — who holds an Australian passport — voluntarily returned to the United States on Tuesday so she can be questioned by the FBI. Oddly, she was escorted through Los Angeles Airport in a wheelchair when she returned to America.
While Danley described herself as a “fun-loving” grandmother on Facebook, records reveal Paddock had wired $100,000 to Marilou’s home in the Philippines shortly before his shooting rampage.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the Las Vegas shooting, saying Paddock was a recent Muslim convert. Authorities shut down those claims so quickly that conspiracy theories of a cover-up are swirling online. For now, there are more questions than answers surrounding this tragedy.
Editor’s note: This story was updated to omit false claims by Newsweek stating Danley was a bigamist who had filed for bankruptcy. Newsweek has since retracted its original story.
