Some recent college graduates are more concerned about what’s happening on the hit HBO series “Game of Thrones” than repaying their student loans, according to a new poll.
That might sound frivolous, but can you blame them? The student loan situation in the United States is totally out of control. Young people graduating from university should not have to start their adult lives saddled with debt. So it’s no wonder they find escapism in mindless TV shows and on social media.
There are currently 44 million student loan borrowers who collectively owe $1.41 trillion, according to LendEDU. The average amount of student loans is $27,975. That doesn’t sound like much, but it’s demoralizing when you owe money before you’ve even collected your first paycheck.

Moreover, today’s college graduates are not even guaranteed that their expensive degrees will translate into a stable, well-paying job given how erratic the U.S. economy has been for the past decade.
It doesn’t help that today’s liberal-arts college education doesn’t teach anything practical. All it does is brainwash young people in political correctness and leftist grievance-mongering.
Meanwhile, liberals and Democrats want the government to pay for illegal aliens and Muslim refugees instead of relieving our youth of crushing debts.
Add to the mix the criminally exorbitant tuition rates that even mediocre colleges and universities charge these days, and you have a recipe for a major millennial existential crisis.
That’s probably why many young people today are lured by the neo-socialism movement of left-wing politicians like Senator Bernie Sanders, who promise free stuff in exchange for votes.
That may also account for the rise of the radical, alt-left Antifa movement, which blames racism, sexism, white people, the rich, and anyone else whom they deem a “have” for why the “have-nots” are poor, unemployed, unhappy, and unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, here’s what LendEDU’s recent poll showed:
- 11 percent of recent college grads are more stressed about “Game of Thrones” than repaying their student loans.
- 74.4% prioritize paying their phone or cable bill over repaying loans.
- 27% prioritize using their money for travel over paying back loans.
- 11% are more stressed about their appearance on social media than repaying loans
- 27.8% prioritize buying healthier and more expensive food. (This actually makes sense because without good health, you really have nothing.)
President Trump has decried the sad state of the student-loan debacle, and proposed capping annual student-loan payments at 12.5% of income. After 15 years, any outstanding debt would be forgiven.
“Students should not be asked to pay more on the debt than they can afford,” Trump said in October 2016. “The debt should not be an albatross around their necks for the rest of their lives.”
