Top FBI lawyer reportedly under investigation for leaking classified information

A top lawyer with the FBI is reportedly under a “criminal” investigation for allegedly leaking classified information to the media.

FBI General Counsel James A. Baker is purported to be a “top suspect” in a Department of Justice criminal investigation, according to a report in Circa on Thursday that cites three government officials as anonymous sources of the information.

Circa has not confirmed what information was leaked or to which media outlets and reported that FBI spokeswoman Carol Cratty would not comment, confirm or deny that there was any investigation at all.

Baker was appointed as FBI’s general counsel in 2014 by his good friend, former FBI Director James Comey who, according to a recent Vox report, turned to him for legal advice following his private meeting with President Trump.

A DOJ official would not comment to Circa regarding the claims of a probe into Baker’s actions. But the source did say that a planned announcement by Attorney General Jeff Sessions on progress of investigations into leaks of classified national security information is part of the overall “stepped up efforts on leak investigations.”

“If these allegations prove to be true,” Circa’s Sara Carter told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Thursday, “it is going to be devastating for the FBI.”

Carter noted that sources told her within the bureau “they are scouring for everything, looking for leakers.”

“They really want to clean house,” she said.

Baker, a fellow at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, has had a long legal career at the Department of Justice, according to his FBI biography.

He joined the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review In 1996 after working in the DOJ’s Criminal Division in the 1990’s as a federal prosecutor. He served as an associate deputy attorney general from 2009-2011 under former President Obama, where he worked on national security issues. Baker also received the CIA’s highest counter-terrorism award in 2006, the George H.W. Bush Award for Excellence in counter-terrorism.
