White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci denied a CNN contributor’s claim that he had asked the FBI to investigate chief of staff Reince Priebus for leaking to the press.

Scaramucci tweeted the denial at 12:47 a.m. ET Thursday morning, an hour after CNN’s Ryan Lizza claimed he had accused Priebus of being one of the many White House leakers.

“Wrong! Tweet was public notice to leakers that all Sr Adm officials are helping to end illegal leaks. @Reince45,” Scaramucci tweeted, as he tagged/cc:ed Preibus.

The latest “palace-intrigue” rumors started after Scaramucci tweeted the following at 10:41 p.m. ET Wednesday night: “In light of the leak of my financial disclosure info which is a felony. I will be contacting @FBI and the @TheJusticeDept #swamp @Reince45.”

The so-called leak of Scaramucci’s financial info was related to a Politico report detailing his divestment of an ownership stake in his investment firm SkyBridge Capital.

The Mooch called the financial disclosure a “leak,” but the info was reportedly public information.

“In case there’s any ambiguity in his tweet, I can confirm that Scaramucci wants the FBI to investigate Reince for leaking,” Lizza tweeted.

Josh Kraushaar of the National Journal added fuel to the fire by claiming Lizza said Anthony Scaramucci had already reported Reince to the FBI over the alleged leak.

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice agreed with Scaramucci, saying there have been way too many leaks designed to damage President Trump.

Scaramucci has since deleted the tweet. On Thursday morning, he told CNN he did not accuse Priebus of being the leaker, but vowed to root out disloyal leakers:

“When I put out a tweet and I put Reince’s name in a tweet, they all make the assumption that it’s him because journalists know who the leakers are. So if Reince wants to explain that he’s not a leaker, let him do that. But let me tell you about myself. I’m a straight shooter and I’ll go right to the heart of the matter.”

The Mooch continued: “The President and I would like to tell everybody we have a very, very good idea of who the leakers are, who the senior leakers are in the White House. Those are the types of leaks that are so treasonous that 150 years ago, people would have actually been hung for those types of leaks.”
