Ted Cruz warns Republicans over Obamacare: We have to deliver now or we’ll look like fools

Sen. Ted Cruz called on Senate Republicans to remember the promises they made to the American people about repealing Obamacare or risk looking “like fools.”

The Texas senator warned his colleagues that they have had years to reach this pivotal moment.

Seven long years.

“Since Obamacare passed, Republicans have been telling the American people ‘if you elect us, we’ll get rid of it,'” Cruz said on “Fox & Friends” Friday.

“We made that promise over and over again,” he said. “We said give us the House, they did. We said give us the Senate, the voters did. We said give us the White House, and we gotta deliver now.”

While pointing out the obvious failure of not making good on this important promise, Cruz thought there was still hope.

“I think there is a path to get to ‘yes.’ I think we’re close,” he said. “There’s a lot of common ground. There’s a handful of holdouts still but I believe we can come together like we have to.”

He believes the focus should be on lowering premiums, something his new Consumer Freedom amendment seeks to accomplish as it allows consumers the freedom to choose any plan they want, including one that still includes all the Obamacare mandates.

The former GOP presidential candidate pointed to a study by the Department of Health and Human Services  which concluded that the amendment would mean lower premiums and higher individual enrollments.

HHS concluded that Cruz’s amendment  “would expand coverage by more than 2 million people and drive down premiums by $7,000 a year. That’s a lot of money for a family that’s struggling,” Cruz said.

“It’s not rocket science,” he added, urging senators “let’s do what we said we would do.”

Cruz shared that he has “had many discussions” with President Trump on the issue and Trump has been “very productive, very helpful” while pressing a simple message: “Get it done.”

“The voters should hold us accountable. If we fail to get this done, I think collectively as Republicans we look like fools,” Cruz said.

He later tweeted a follow-up.

Twitter users seemed to get what Cruz was saying. Now if only the rest of the Republicans in Congress could do the same.
