President Trump’s harsh Sessions criticism throws Fox News hosts for a loop

It “seems to be coming out of nowhere.”

Fox News Chief National Correspondent Ed Henry questioned the wisdom of some of the remarks President Donald Trump made during an interview with The New York Times. Chief among those was an attack on his attorney general, former Sen. Jeff Sessions, for recusing himself from the investigation of Russian meddling into the 2016 election.

“Sessions should have never recused himself,” he told the Times. “And if he was going to recuse himself he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else.”

During the same interview, Trump stated a belief that former FBI Director James Comey used a “phony” dossier to threaten him, and warned special counsel Robert Mueller to steer clear of investigating the family finances.

At about the four-minute mark, “The Five” co-host Dana Perino wondered why Trump would bring these subjects up at an interview when several key items of his agenda — health care and tax reform — are now before Congress.

“I have to ask, the president has a brand new legal team, right? From Ty Cobb, the giant of lawyers in Washington, D.C. Is this part of his advice in moving forward?”

Henry said he couldn’t imagine that would be a lawyer’s advice.

“You can’t craft a scenario Dana, where Ty Cobb would want the President of the United States to do,” he said.

Henry believed the advice would be the exact opposite — to refuse to comment on the Russia investigation.

“Instead, we have the president attacking his own attorney general… that seems to be coming out of nowhere,” Henry added. “But when you talk about the legal advice from Trump’s legal time, part of their frustration has been that rather than letting this settle down, the president has been riling it up.”

“That is true,” co-host Jesse Watters agreed. “He has been going forward very strongly on this investigation.”

Perino believed Trump’s attack was unfair because Sessions could not have predicted that he would recuse himself when he accepted the appointment.

“How could he have predicted the future that he would going to recuse himself about a Russia issue,” which happened after his appointment was confirmed by the Senate. “I don’t understand why dumping on Sessions tonight makes sense.”

She also thought the president’s remarks indicated a unappreciation for Sessions’ strong loyalty from the start and for what she said was the “pretty good job” he’d been doing for the administration.

Earlier in the Fox News primetime lineup, host Tucker Carlson was equally perplexed.

“It’s possible there’s context there we’re missing,” Carlson said after reading the Trump statement. “But it looks like a direct attack by the president on one of his first supporters and a widely-respected man in Washington, the attorney general of the United States, Jeff Sessions.”
