Hollywood producer buys terrorism insurance, afraid of backlash over new fiction series about young Jesus

The creator of “Orange Is the New Black” revealed that work on a new fictional series about Jesus prompted her to purchase terrorism insurance.

Focusing on the teen years of Jesus, the project she is developing for Netflix has “got some people nervous,” Jenji Kohan admitted in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

“It’s like The Wonder Years but with Jesus, and there’s all sorts of things where we cross lines and people get weird about it,” the award-winning screenwriter and television producer said. “People get crazy because they bathe in these characters, and they take it personally.”

Kohan, best known for creating the Netflix drama “Orange Is the New Black” and also producing the Showtime series “Weeds,” discussed the new project with the Hollywood Reporter last month during a roundtable gathering with other television producers.

Kohan considered the terrorism insurance a sound idea in the chance that the series inspires some kind of violent outburst from viewers.

“You’re always going to do something that someone doesn’t like and you don’t know how crazy that someone’s going to be,” the 47 year-old said.

“There’s always crazies out there,” she added.

Kohan did not provide specific details about the series, which has no release date yet. Set to chronicle the life of Jesus during his teen years, the plot would be purely fictional as the Bible’s only insight into Jesus’ young life, after his birth, is when He is found by his parents teaching in the temple as a young boy.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, terrorism insurance would cover “individuals and businesses for potential losses due to acts of terrorism.”

“Prior to 9/11, standard commercial insurance policies included terrorism coverage as part of the package, effectively free of charge. Today, terrorism coverage is generally offered separately at a price that more adequately reflects the current risk,” the website states.
