Liz Warren overreacts to Kid Rock’s potential Senate bid

Sen. Elizabeth Warren thinks where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

And the Massachusetts Democrat is raising the alarm about the reported possibility of Kid Rock running for Senate.

“I know a lot of people are thinking: this is some sort of joke, right?” Warren wrote in a fundraising email to fellow Democrats Friday, warning that the musician’s plans to run for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2018 should be taken seriously, the Boston Herald reported.

Robert James Ritchie, known by his professional stage name Kid Rock, tweeted about the news Wednesday leading some to speculate that it was a publicity stunt. But the 46 year-old singer later insisted in a blog post that “it’s not a hoax.”

“Well, maybe this is all a joke,” Warren wrote in her email with the subject line ““Senator Kid Rock (R-MI).”

“But we all thought Donald Trump was joking when he rode down the escalator at Trump Tower and announced his campaign, too,” she continued. “And sure, maybe this is just a marketing gimmick for a new album or tour — but we all thought Donald Trump was just promoting his reality TV show, too.”

Warren’s email included a link to a fundraising page where proceeds would be split between Warren’s re-election campaign and the 2018 campaign of Michigan Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, whom Rock has openly criticized.

Stabenow reacted to Rock’s announcement in a tweet on Wednesday.

The outsopken conservative responded in kind.

“Senator Stabenow and I do share a love of music, although probably not the same kind,” the Michigan native wrote in his blog post.  “I concede she is better at playing politics than I am so I’ll keep doing what I do best, which is being a voice for tax paying, hardworking AMERICANS and letting politicians like her know that We the People are sick and tired of their bullsh**!”

Republican state Rep. Geoff Diehl criticized Warren’s email as proof that she has her sights set on something other than the needs of her constituents.

“She uses any and every issue, whether it’s a celebrity Republican or it’s Hillary Clinton, to try to scare her support base into giving her more money so that she can reach that main goal I believe of running for president … not of focusing on the concerns of her constituents in Massachusetts,” he said.

The former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party believes the Kid Rock stands a good chance as a candidate.

He’s well-liked,” Saul Anuzis said, according to the Herald. “He’s a big proponent of Detroit and somebody who’s put his money where his mouth is investing back home.”

“I do believe if he were to put together an anti-obstructionist, drain-the-swamp kind of message and could articulate four or five positions that drive people, he could potentially be a credible candidate,” Anuzis continued. “It’d be a mistake to write him off.”

A President Trump supporter, who visited the White House in April 2017 with fellow rocker Ted Nugent and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, Kid Rock has not yet filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission.
