GOP operative who sought Hillary emails committed suicide, left note that sets off conspiracy firestorm

Ten days after telling the Wall Street Journal that he was attempting to get his hands on Hillary Clinton’s missing emails from Russian hackers, a Republican operative killed himself.

Peter W. Smith, gave the interview to the Journal during the presidential campaign in May 2016 and, after he died, WSJ reported there was no reason to suspect anything other than natural causes.

But now details of his demise have been discovered, by the Chicago Tribune, which reports that the 81-year-old killed himself and left a suicide note in which Smith took the time to clear anyone of murdering him.

“NO FOUL PLAY WHATSOEVER,” he wrote.

He blamed a “RECENT BAD TURN IN HEALTH SINCE JANUARY, 2017” and added that his “LIFE INSURANCE OF $5 MILLION (was) EXPIRING.”

Smith also told a man at the hotel he was staying in, across from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, that “tomorrow (was his) last day,” according to the police report of the suicide.

Someone employed at the hotel when Smith died said he was staying there while being treated for a heart condition.

Smith was found with a bag over his head and a source of helium.

His official cause of death was listed as “asphyxiation due to displacement of oxygen in confined space with helium.”

“When I got there and saw the tank, I thought, “I’ve seen this before,” and was able to put two and two together,” the former employee told the Tribune.

Smith implied that he was working with Gen. Mike Flynn and that he was convinced that Russian hackers had the missing emails.

Smith’s body was cremated, according to the Tribune.

Authorities don’t suspect foul play in Smith’s death, but social media was not certain.

Conspiracy theories started being spun quickly after the suicide note was reported.

Congressman Ted Lieu got in on the act too, but it seemed his conspiracy theory focused on those close to President Donald Trump.

But the majority of fingers in the conspiracy world were pointed at the Clintons.

Some in the #Resistance, other than Lieu, wanted to blame President Trump, but it’s tough to comprehend why he would want to get rid of someone that was attempting to help him. Particularly if you want to believe in the Russia collusion theory.
