Red flags go up over Mattel’s cringe-worthy new line of ‘evolving’ Ken dolls

It was just a matter of time after Barbie got a politically correct makeover that her friend Ken would follow suit.

After more than five decades of relatively little change, new physically diverse Ken dolls have arrived.

Seven of the 15 new Ken dolls in Mattel’s new Barbie and Ken Fashionistas line were unveiled on “Good Morning America” Tuesday.

Certainly not the Ken dolls you grew up with, the new dolls feature three body types, seven skin tones and nine hairstyles as well as new fashions fit for today’s generation.

“By continuing to expand our product line, we are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation,” Lisa McKnight, Barbie’s senior vice president and general manager, said in a press release, according to ABC.

“Evolving Ken was a natural evolution for the brand and allows girls to further personalize the role they want him to play in Barbie’s world,” she said.

Ten of the new trendy Ken dolls are available as of today while the rest will be released by the company over the next few months.

While nowhere near the more than 100 diverse-look Barbies released by Mattel in the last three years, the more than one dozen new Kens seem like just the beginning.
