Chilling! Bernie Sanders openly disqualifies nominee from serving because of his Christian beliefs

Sen. Bernie Sanders went way out into left field and arguably broke his oath of office when he suggested a White House nominee was disqualified from serving because of his Christian beliefs.

The Vermont Independent blasted Office of Management and Budget deputy Director nominee Russell Vought last week for an article he’d written denouncing Islam as a “deficient theology.”

“This is the fundamental problem. Muslims do not simply have a deficient theology. They do not know God because they have rejected Jesus Christ his Son, and they stand condemned,” Vought wrote in The Resurgent, a Conservative blog.

Sanders repeatedly asked the nominee during a Senate Budget Committee hearing whether his statement was Islamophobic. Vought repeatedly answered that it wasn’t — it was merely in conformity with his Christian faith.

“Absolutely not,” Vought said. “I’m a Christian, and I believe in a Christian set of principles based on my faith. That post … was to defend my alma mater, Wheaton College, a Christian school that has a statement of faith that includes the centrality of Jesus Christ for salvation.”

Sanders wasn’t satisfied with this answer and repeated his question several times, but in each instance cut Vought off the moment he said that “I’m a Christian,” the context in which he’d made the statement defending his alma mater. This clearly frustrated Sanders.

“I understand that you are a Christian!” Sanders shouted. “But this country is made up of people who are not just — I understand that Christianity is the majority religion, but there are other people of different religions in this country and around the world. In your judgment, do you think that people who are not Christians are going to be condemned?”

Vought responded that people of all faiths are “made in the image of God and are worthy of dignity and respect regardless of their religious beliefs.” But that didn’t satisfy Sanders, who repeated his question and asked if Muslims “stand condemned.”

When the nominee again attempted to pose his response in the context of his religious beliefs, Sanders announced that he was finished and would be voting “no” on Vought’s confirmation.

Section 3 of Article VI of the U.S. Constitution provides that “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” Yet this is clearly what Sanders is imposing on Vought.

People were understandably appalled and took to social media to show their disgust.

In addition to prohibiting religious tests, Article VI of the U.S. Constitution also requires that all federal officials — including members of Congress — must take an oath supporting the Constitution.

Sanders apparently broke his oath of office.
