Heartbreak turned to laughter for an Air Force veteran in Texas after he found why all the American flags in his front yard had been stolen.
The San Antonio man was surprised to learn that the disappearance of the flags from his front lawn memorial was not due to vandals, but to squirrels.
“It wasn’t like they had just fallen off,” Jennifer Northam told FOX 29 about her father’s flags. “Both of us were kind of heartbroken. We were just confused because we’re new to the neighborhood. We didn’t know if somebody did it or what happened.”
But their neighbor, Devin Rivera-Duque, knew exactly what happened and caught the “thieves” in action.
“I saw her with the first flag,” Rivera-Duque said, referring to the suspect squirrel. “I was just freaked out. The second and third flag, I just started recording her.”
It was a pair of squirrels that Rivera-Duque caught on camera as they patiently worked to free the flags from the sticks. Determined, the duo struggled until succeeding, rolling the flags into a ball and placing them in their mouth before running off.
“I was just like, ‘Oh my god,’” Rivera-Duque said. “These animals have a mind of their own. Like, you never would guess that they would do something like that.”
Northam was just as surprised.
“How crazy that it was actually a squirrel that took it,” she said. “And they made a nest out of them.”
Rivera-Duque pointed out the star-spangled nest built with 10 American flags high up in a tree.
“It was like relief came over both of us,” Northam added. “Because we finally understood that it wasn’t someone. It was something. I mean, how amazing that they use their resources like that. They find something new, figured it would work and used it.”
Viewers of the video debated on Twitter whether or not the squirrels were adorable or really patriotic for building an American flag nest.
