Tiger Woods makes statement about his arrest: ‘Alcohol was not involved’

Tiger Woods spoke out about being arrested on a DUI charge and declared that alcohol was not a factor.

The golf legend released a statement Monday evening clarifying that “alcohol was not involved” in the early morning arrest that landed him in a Florida jail, the New York Post reported.

“I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions,” he said in an effort at damage control following his arrest on suspicion of DUI in Palm Beach County on Monday.

“I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved,” Woods continued. “What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.”

The 41-year-old winner of 14 major professional golf championships had back surgery in April and is out for the season as he recovers, according to the Post.

“I would like to apologize with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans,” Woods said in the statement. “I expect more from myself too. I will do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again.”

A report on the arrest may be forthcoming on Tuesday, according to Jupiter Police spokeswoman Kristin Rightler who would not verify whether the arrest involved drugs or alcohol, the Post reported.

PGA Tour spokesman Ty Votaw would not offer comment and Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, reportedly did not respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.

Woods thanked the police and sheriff’s office in his statement.
