“Do you think basketball is the most important thing in life?”
During a post-game press conference, the coach of a Lithuanian basketball team was pressed on the absence of Augusto Lima, his star center, who missed an important playoff game Friday to witness the birth of his daughter.

Zalgiris head coach Sarunas Jasikevicius was patient but firm when answering the young reporter’s questions, beginning with his thoughts about “Lima going away in the midst of a series to attend the birth of his child.”
“What do I think about it?” Jasikevicius said. “I allowed him to go.”
When the reporter pressed him on proper protocol in such situations, the coach had a question of his own.
“Do you have kids?” Jasikevicius asked the reporter. “When you have kids, youngster, you’ll understand. Because that’s the height of a human experience. Wow, that’s a good question, really. Do you think basketball is the most important thing in life?”
The reporter allowed as how he had no children of his own, but said that the semi-finals were important to team Zalgiris.
“Did you see the number of fans at the game? Important?” Jasikevicius shot back before schooling the young reporter on what’s truly important — and it’s not a basketball game.
“When you see your first child, you will understand what the most important thing in life is. Because nothing can be more majestic in the world than the birth of a child. Not titles, not anything else. Augusto Lima is now in heaven emotionally. I’m really happy for him.”
On Sunday Lima posted a photo on Instagram, calling the birth of his daughter Alba — his first-born — “undoubtedly the best gift of my life.”
GRACIAS! ❤??
As for Zalgiris, they won their semifinal playoff Friday.
