The Justice Department under former President Obama reportedly discriminated against military veterans who were applying for positions within the department.
A new report from the U.S. Office of Special Counsel showed that the DOJ tried to force two veterans applying for jobs to withdraw their applications, then cancelled the job postings before rewriting them so the veterans would no longer meet the qualifications, The Washington Times reported.

Federal law requires preferential consideration for veterans like the two who applied for positions in the International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program. But meetings were scheduled off-site by justice officials in an attempt to get the veteran applicants to withdraw their applications.
“OSC found hiring violations for two positions at DOJ where officials sought to encourage preference eligible veterans to withdraw their applications,” the government watchdog agency said. “DOJ wanted to hire a non-veteran candidate. When the veterans declined to withdraw, DOJ selected the non-veteran candidate, despite rules mandating that veterans receive priority in hiring over non-veterans in certain circumstances.”

Despite being told by human resources that the veterans had to be given the jobs, and after the candidates refused to withdraw their applications, hiring officials pulled the job postings and re-listed them the following year. The 2016 postings included qualifications that now guaranteed the veterans could not meet.
Hiring officials denied pressuring the veterans, stating they only explained why they should withdraw their job applications. This was still a violation of federal law, the agency noted even though re-listing of the jobs, while “sketchy” was not a clear violation.
The Office of Special Counsel called for Justice Department officials to be disciplined for the actions and trained to avoid future incidents, the Times reported.
