Arizona Sheriff calls border wall a ‘medieval solution,’ triggers one heck of a history lesson from Tucker

Apparently not everyone in law enforcement is in favor of President Trump’s border wall between the U.S. and Mexico and it isn’t sitting well with Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson.

An Arizona sheriff is opposed to the idea he calls a “medieval solution to a modern problem.”

Pima County Sheriff Mark Napier told Carlson that there are more effective and lower cost alternatives available to building the structure. Oh, and that he’ll take for his unit whatever savings comes as a result of not building.

“For 10,000 years, mankind’s been building walls around things and what we think in 2017, with the robust array of technological options that we have, human resources and other things, that we can come up with a better solution,” Napier said Friday on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

The sheriff, whose county includes 125 miles of the border and the city of Tucson, said in a previous interview with New York Times podcast “The Daily,” that a fraction of the wall’s funding would be better off being given to law enforcement to help them do their jobs.

“I think it’s kind of a medieval solution to a modern problem,” Napier said, and he reinforced those comments on Fox News.

“My fear is that we’re continuing this dialogue of ‘a wall, a wall, wall,’ which to many of us, just doesn’t seem credible,” he said. “And in that discourse, we’re losing the more serious discussions about how to better secure our border at a lower cost point, perhaps more effectively.”

Carlson noted that having a wall is at least one solution that could help alleviate a weak border which, the sheriff agreed, leads to national security, public safety and human rights problems.

“I would much we rather change the discourse to looking at a wall as an analogous term,” Napier said, explaining that a blend of fixed barriers, human resources and technology would be more effective than a traditional wall.

Carlson countered that voters don’t believe anyone in Washington D.C. wants to actively stop illegal immigration and a physical wall would serve as tangible proof that something is being done.

“They just want concrete evidence that somebody is taking this seriously,” Carlson said.

“It’s an easy sound bite. It’s easy to digest,” Napier responded. “This is a very complex issue. And perhaps that’s why we’re still dealing with it.”

“Really, because you know what’s a really easy sound bite?” Carlson shot back. “With respect, that this is a ‘medieval solution to a modern problem'”

“Nothing we’ve done in the past 50 years has really worked,” he said. “And so what’s the guarantee that your solution will be different and will work?”

The sheriff replied that many administrations have failed to solve the problem but he currently sees no actions in the border wall discussion that would help border sheriffs and border communities.

“This is not a new problem,” Napier said. “We have to change the discourse on this and hold the people in Washington D.C.responsible.”
