Watch: Trump’s budget chief turn false argument around on Chris Wallace

Democrats who refuse to fund a wall at the southern border are losing sight of the big picture.

That was the conclusion of Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney during his appearance on “Fox News Sunday.”

“FNS” host Chris Wallace wondered if President Donald Trump’s offer to continue Obamacare subsidies for low-income families in return for their support to fund a border wall was ill-advised.

“You are holding hostage health insurance for millions of lower-income Americans,” Wallace said.

But Mulvaney turned the argument around.

“Actually, what I would say is [Democrats are] holding hostage national security,” the OMB chief replied. “Again, something they supported in the recent past when President Obama was in the Senate.”

“We’re worried that this is sending a message that this is going to be the next four years,” he continued, observing that Democrats obstructed the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. “The Democrats will oppose everything that this president wants to do, which is stunning to us, especially when we are offering them something they want in return.”

Wallace wasn’t yet buying it, though.

“You’re saying, give us what we want. And if you don’t, we’re going to cut off funding that would provide health insurance for millions of lower-income Americans.”

Mulvaney pushed back.

“We are trying to get a border wall to protect millions of low-income Americans against folks who aren’t supposed to be here. So, it’s a national security –”

At that point Wallace interrupted.

“But are you willing to cut off the funding?” he asked.

“We are willing to talk about the things that we want and things that they want,” the OMB director answered. “That’s how Washington is supposed to work and used to work on up until the recent past.”

Also on Sunday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions also argued that a border wall could be funded in part by reducing erroneously issued tax credits that go to “mostly Mexicans.”
