Harvey Weinstein is livid over ‘insane’ R rating of his new teen transgender film, vows to fight

Film producer Harvey Weinstein is furious that his new film exploiting transgender teens has been rated “R” by the film ratings board.

Weinstein’s new film, entitled “3 Generations,” explores the story of a teen girl (Elle Fanning) who wants to “transition” as a boy and details the way the girl’s unusual family deals with the situation. But the Motion Picture Association of America gave the film its restrictive “R” rating based on strong language and sexual references, the Associated Press reported.

The film opens in a limited release in Los Angeles and New York on May 5 and also stars Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon.

Weinstein insists that his film is of cultural significance and doesn’t deserve an “R” rating.

“I am not complaining about it when we do a horror movie, you know, when we do ‘It Follows.’ We understand we live by the rules,” Weinstein said. “When the movie has something of social importance to say, I think it’s important that we stand up. I admit that I’m temperamental but nevertheless I try to fight for good. This is insane.”

But the film producer has had these bouts with the ratings board in the past and many claim that Weinstein uses these ratings fights as just another way to get extra publicity for his movies.

When this was pointed out to him this week, Weinstein waved off the charge.

“Honestly, this is not a publicity attempt,” Weinstein exclaimed. “If it was I’d just say so because I don’t care. I find nothing wrong with seeking publicity. This is issue oriented.”

Unsurprisingly, extreme gay activists are lining up in support of the film producer’s complaints over the rating.

“All that differentiates the film from other PG-13 films is a few instances of strong language,” said Sarah Kate Ellis of the extremist gay advocacy group GLAAD. “The film does not include graphic violence, drug use, or nudity – it merely portrays a modern family.”

Weinstein plans to challenge the rating.
