Trump administration backing off on AP claims that Russia knew about Syrian chemical strikes

The media is going bananas over a Monday afternoon Associated Press report that quotes a “senior U.S. official” with claims that Russia knew about the April 4 chemical attack on Syrian civilians.

The “evidence” used was the fact that a drone was spotted flying over a hospital that was later bombed in what U.S. officials claim was an attempt to cover-up the fact that chemical weapons were used.

According to the AP report, “Until Monday, U.S. officials had said they weren’t sure if the drone was operated by Russia or Syria. The senior official said it still wasn’t clear who was flying the jet that bombed the hospital. The official said the presence of the drone couldn’t have been a coincidence, and that Russia must have known the chemical weapons attack was coming and that victims were seeking treatment.”

However, the Washington Examiner reported later Monday night that a senior administration official has put the brakes on these assumptions about what Russia knew, at least for now.

“At this time, there is no U.S. Intelligence Community consensus that Russia had foreknowledge of the Syrian chemical attack,” the official told the Examiner.

Additionally, the fact that there is no new evidence that Russia either knew about the attacks in advance or aided the Assad regime has been confirmed by a senior Pentagon official.
