Russia ups the ante, joins Iran to threaten retaliation if US crosses any more ‘red lines’

Russian president Vladimir Putin with Iranian president Hassan Rouhani.

Russia and Iran threatened to retaliate against the United States if it crosses any more “red lines” with further attacks on their ally, Syria.

In an ominous joint statement, Iran and Russia laid down the gauntlet to President Trump after he ordered the bombing of a Syrian airfield last week:

What America waged in an aggression on Syria is a crossing of red lines. From now on, we will respond with force to any aggressor or any breach of red lines from whoever it is, and America knows our ability to respond well.

Russian president Vladimir Putin is reportedly furious that Trump crossed Syrian president Bashar al Assad, the dictator he’s propping up in Syria, which has been involved in a bloody civil war since 2011.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson blamed Russia for the escalating tensions, saying it broke its promise to the international community by not enforcing Syria’s agreement to not use chemical weapons. (He should also blame former president Obama and national security adviser Susan Rice for lying to the American public when they said they took away all of Syria’s chemical weapons.)

“The real failure here has been Russia’s failure to live up to its commitments under the chemical weapons agreements that were entered into in 2013 … as the guarantor to play the role in Syria of securing chemical weapons, destroying the chemical weapons, and continuing to monitor that situation,” Tillerson said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Tillerson said Russia has failed the international community either by deliberately not enforcing that agreement or by being hoodwinked by Syria.

“I hope Russia is thinking carefully about its continued alliance with Bashar al-Assad, because every time one of these horrific attacks occurs, it draws Russia closer into some level of responsibility,” Tillerson said.
