Cops defend video of 22-year-old woman getting slammed to the ground

A Colorado police officer body-slammed a girl during an arrest Thursday, a Snapchat video of the incident shows.

Footage posted Saturday shows the Fort Collins police officer throwing the 22 year-old girl to the ground face first, reports NBC News.

The video shows the officer trying to get Michaella Surat, a junior at Colorado State University, under control. She steps away from the officer, which is when the officer throws her on the ground.

Kate Kimble, the police department spokeswoman, called the move “standard arrest technique.” She added that Surat physically assaulted the officer before he threw her down.

Police maintained that the officer arrived to the scene after receiving calls of a disturbance concerning Surat’s boyfriend at a bar Thursday. Surat “shoulder-checked” an officer when they were trying to get more information on the situation, police said.

Surat then hit the officer when they refused to let her leave from the scene, police added. Police arrested and charged her for third-degree assault and obstruction, Kimble said.

Fort Collins Police Chief John Hutto warned people from trusting the social media video. He said the video does not show the entire situation and lacks context.

“As with most events of this type, the short, publicly-available video does not have the context or content of the full event,” Hutto said in a statement Sunday night. “Additionally, rarely in use of force situations is there agreement from all the parties involved as to the appropriateness, efficacy, or necessity of its use.”

Police are planning to investigate the situation and will release the footage after it concludes.
