Democratic senators got fili-busted Thursday when Senate Republicans voted to invoke the so-called “nuclear option” during the confirmation process of Judge Neil Gorsuch, defeating the minority party’s attempt to keep him off the Supreme Court.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called for a vote on the nuclear option when it became apparent that it would be impossible to obtain the 60 votes necessary to end debate.

Thursday was the first time in American history that a filibuster of a Supreme Court nominee had been attempted — and with today’s vote it will be the last.
The nuclear option — perhaps more correctly labeled the Reid Rule after former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat — would permit Gorsuch to be cleared by a simple 51-vote majority in the Senate.
Reid changed Senate rules four years earlier to allow for simply majority votes to approve presidential cabinet members and judicial appointments up to, but not including, appointments to the high court.
With a nod to Reid, some called this the ultimate “Throwback Thursday” prank on Democrats.

Cameron Gray called it “karma” and gave all the credit to Reid with a quote of his 2013 tweet. Like Reid said, “It had to be done.”
Many saw this coming days ago and implored McConnell to use this option.

Reid, best known for his hyper-partisanship, claimed that by removing the opportunity for filibuster, he was restoring democracy to the Senate chamber.
Nov 2013 #NuclearOption returns democracy to the Senate.
thanks for that @TheDemocrats https://t.co/nYwq8NTpeb pic.twitter.com/OQNoj1WN4R

When Harry Reid invoked #nuclearoption in 2013 no one talked about "how much it would change the senate." GOP does it and it's all you hear.

@PlaysTrumpCard @ChristiChat @TheDemocrats I never thought I would ever say this but thanks Harry Reid. Of course I still think you’re a schmuck! ??????

Thursday was a black day for liberals — but it was one of their own choosing.
The liberal crying right now is epic. They should thank @SenatorReid for opening that can of worms. #NuclearOption #SCOTUS #NeilGorsuch pic.twitter.com/ZzbSfptR5j

Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, howled that the rule changes could send the Senate and the nomination process “over the cliff.”
“It doesn’t have to be this way,” the New York Democrat said. “The answer is not to change the rules, it’s to change the nominee.”
Schumer feared that Gorsuch “may very well turn out to be one of the most conservative justices on the bench.”
One can only hope.
