KUDOS: NYPD flips de Blasio a giant bird over sanctuary city status

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s dream of turning the Big Apple into a sanctuary city is going up in smoke.

Turns out police officers actually believe in the rule of law.

Relations between Gracie Mansion and the NYPD have never been cordial, and once degenerated to a point where thousands of New York’s finest actually turned their backs on the mayor at an event.

Now his officers are operating in defiance of de Blasio’s sanctuary city policy, by notifying Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials of upcoming court appearances of illegal immigrants, according to the New York Daily News, which reported:

As a “sanctuary city,” the city currently only complies with Immigration and Customs Enforcement “detainer” orders to hold a defendant until federal agents can take custody in cases involving violent or serious felonies.

But in the process of verifying warrants against a defendant, officials said the NYPD will contact relevant law enforcement, including ICE, thereby alerting the agency to an immigrant’s upcoming appearance in a city courtroom.

Advocates slammed the practice, saying it amounts to “collusion” with immigration officials that goes against the spirit of Mayor de Blasio’s pledge that the city will remain a sanctuary city.

Shortly after taking office in 2014, de Blasio signed a bill into law that limits notifying ICE officers to only those defendants accused of “violent or serious felonies.”

NYPD’s flaunting of de Blasio’s orders first came to the attention of public defenders in two separate hearings in Queens last month. Both cases involved defendants accused of committing non-violent crimes, and the city in each case refused to comply with ICE detainer orders.

Nonetheless, an immigration officer appeared in court in each instance, arresting one but declining do the same with the other for undisclosed reasons.

“I think it really is outrageous,” said Lori Zeno, co-founder and deputy director of Queens Law Associates, according to the Daily News. “We’re supposed to be a sanctuary city. What does it mean if our own court system is participating in turning folks in to ICE?”

NYPD chief spokesman Stephen Davis claimed the two cases were properly handled.

“Nothing was compromised in terms of the policies of the department. These guys didn’t suffer any consequence,” Davis said.

Zeno said more should be done to comply with New York City’s sanctuary status.

“The mayor can issue a command to the police department that they shouldn’t be calling ICE,” Zeno said. “Cooperating with ICE is one thing … But to me they seem to be in collusion with ICE.”

The situation may have enraged Zeno, but folks on social media loved it.
