If Melania Trump was a Democrat, she would probably be praised as a champion of free thinking liberal women for her decision to not move in to the White House yet.
The first lady does plan to move in June, after 11-year-old son Barron finishes his current year of school in New York City.
Despite the fact that a new school has already been selected for the youngest child of President Donald Trump and White House staff is already preparing for his arrival with his mother, liberals have launched a petition demanding the move.

More than 248,000 people have already signed a change.org petition issuing an ultimatum for the first lady to move into the White House, or else pay for the security expenses of keeping her and Barron in New York City.
“The U.S. taxpayer is paying an exorbitant amount of money to protect the First Lady in Trump Tower, located in New York City. As to help relieve the national debt, this expense yields no positive results for the nation and should be cut from being funded,” a statement on the petition page read.
The petition was started by Doug Caruana and is supposed to be delivered to Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren once it reaches its goal of 300,000.
The New York Police Department is seeking to be reimbursed for the cost of protecting the first family while at their Manhattan residence. Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill estimated that security for the president and his family cost about $24 million for the two months between Election Day and the inauguration, according to NBC-4.
The department estimated a daily cost of $127,000 to $146,000 to protect Melania and Barron Trump. That increases to an estimated $308,000 a day if the president is in New York City, though he has not returned since the inauguration.
While some Twitter users agreed with the petition’s call and joined the demand for the first lady to move, many others were quick to defend her choice and call out the hypocrisy of the left in not supporting parent’s choosing what’s best for a child.
@DailyCaller I’m starting a petition that those thousands of people mind their own darn business.

@DailyCaller seems like a sort of counter-feminist idea for a woman to be required to uproot her life because her husband got a new job.

Some questioned the effectiveness of the petition, or any petition for that matter.
@DailyCaller Lol, like they have any say in it. Also do people realize that teens & kids also sign those petitions. They have emails too.

Much of the criticism about the petition, and its grandstanding, was shredded by Twitter users who provided a bit of historical perspective.
