President Donald Trump noted that the fighting spirit of the Irish people helped build the United States of America in a meeting with the Irish prime minister this week.
“I know a lot about the Irish. They fight. They’re tough,” Trump said during the reception.
The president went on to insist that the Irish people have contributed much toward making the U.S. a prosperous country.
“They contributed mightily to America’s innovation and America’s prosperity,” the president said. “It’s inspiring and really helped a relatively young nation.”
As always, nothing Trump does or says goes without controversy. Trump shared what he called one of his favorite (Irish) proverbs.

Immediately, his critics on social media started accusing the authenticiy and origin of the proverb.
“Trump’s ‘Irish Proverb’ appears to a Nigerian poem,” blasted CNN.
And the Washington Post called the proverb ‘questionable’ in its headline about so-called St. Patrick’s day “mishaps.”
The Hill reported:
A White House spokeswoman said the proverb was “originally supplied in an email on March 8 by the State Department via [the National Security Council] as building blocks in advance of this event. These building blocks were supplied in the context of the Shamrock Ceremony and were ultimately used in the prepared remarks for the luncheon.”
The spokeswoman also shared a list of books and websites the quote has been shared on.
Meanhile, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny thanked Trump for the complimentary comments and said he was “proud to be here for a new era.” Kenny added that he and Trump had a “first class” meeting.
“The job you hold is exceptionally demanding and exceptionally difficult,” Kenny said to the president.
