Praise for Trump from CNN’s Van Jones and Anderson Cooper; it was enough to cause Hannity to drink

It was enough to cause one popular conservative to call for a drink.

Both CNN political commentator Van Jones and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper agreed that Tuesday night was a good one for President Donald Trump.

But maybe it was just that they were relieved that they weren’t MSNBC.

They both poked fun at MSNBC host Rachel Maddow for falling for a trick — apparently performed by the president himself — to publish on-air Trump’s federal tax forms, indicating that he earned $153 million and paid $36.5 million in income taxes in 2005.

She claimed it as breaking news of great significance, but the joke was on her.

What the tax forms showed, however, was what truly benefitted the president as Jones explained.

“If all we get tonight is that Donald Trump paid $38 million to America’s government, that’s a good night for Donald Trump,” Obama’s former green jobs czar said. “I’m sorry, but there’s just really no way–I was hoping and praying that it would show not only did he pay no taxes, he actually charged the government and got money back.”

Nope. It turned out he paid out 25 percent of his income in taxes.

Those moments that conservatives agree with Cooper and Jones are few and far between. When Fox News host Sean Hannity learned of the news, he ran a beeline to the liquor cabinet.

Later on CNN, host Don Lemon still didn’t get it. He thought there had to be something harmful to Trump in those forms and brought David Cay Johnston, the journalist who presented them to Maddow, to find out what it was.

“How is this not good for Donald Trump?” Lemon wanted to know.

“Oh, I think it might be good for Donald Trump,” Johnston responded. “One of the things that’s very strange about this is Donald Trump probably would benefit from releasing his tax returns with a lot of people.”

And so it was. “Fox & Friends” reported Friday that by comparison, Trump paid a larger percentage of his income in taxes than former President Barack Obama, independent Sen.: Bernie Sanders and even media giant Comcast.

This isn’t the first time Jones has praised Trump. An instance during the president’s address to a joint session of Congress caused him to remark that at that moment he became our president.

Tuesday night’s success also capped off a successful meeting with a Saudi prince — one which the prince described as a “historic turning point” in U.S.-Saudi relations.
