Gowdy: Congress stinks at investigating crimes, but here’s how Comey will be handled …

Don’t hold your breath.

That’s what Congressman Trey Gowdy suggested while discussing the upcoming Congressional investigation into alleged Russian interference with the 2016 election.

Gowdy, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said he doesn’t expect much because Congress just isn’t that good at investigating crimes. The evidentiary process kicks off March 20.

“The House is not equipped to investigate allegations of crime,” Gowdy told Fox & Friends co-host Abby Huntsman. “Congress does have a role to play in this investigation, but we don’t investigate crime because we’re not very good at it.”

Gowdy said the public should “keep an open mind” about sensationalistic media reports concluding that there was collusion between the Russians and the Trump administration.

Trey Gowdy said the House Intelligence Committee will also investigate the illegal press leaks coming from inside the intelligence community. Gowdy said the media has downplayed them, but the leaks are dangerous and illegal.

“The leaks are super-important, but folks in the media might re-calibrate the importance of these issues,” Gowdy said. “The leaks are both illegal and deleterious to our national security, so I’m really interested in how this got out.”

When asked what he thought about President Trump’s accusations that former president Obama had wiretapped Trump Towers, Gowdy said the truth will come out.

“If this is true, there will be an evidentiary paper trail,” said Gowdy, who was a federal prosecutor for 16 years. “This will either be corroborated, or it will be contradicted.”

When asked what he thought about FBI Director James Comey, Gowdy said he respects Comey but will treat him like any other witness:

I have an interesting and rich history with Director Comey. He has an incredibly hard job. I’m probably biased toward the FBI, based on my background.

He’s not infallible. He’s a witness like every other witness: He’s going to be examined, he’s going to be cross-examined. He’s going to be tested, he’s going to be probed. And ultimately, you and your viewers will be able to determine whether or not he is credible and believable.
